The exhibition design captures the spirit of Publieke Werken: celebrating Amsterdam's architectural heritage through immersive and sustainable storytelling.

Publieke Werken en de Amsterdamse School at the Het Schip Museum in Amsterdam was a large-scale exhibition shining a spotlight on how municipal projects defined the city’s architectural evolution from 1915 to 1935. Despite having a wealth of archival materials and intricate backstories, the challenge lay in weaving these elements into a compelling narrative that remained approachable for both dedicated enthusiasts and casual visitors.

We devised an immersive experience that mapped out distinct thematic sections—for instance, focusing on Michel De Klerk’s signature designs, Piet Kramer’s architectural details, and broader social contexts influencing urban development. Large cardboard pavilions not only provided a visually striking setting but also aligned with sustainability aims, allowing for easy recycling once the exhibition concluded.

Vibrant color schemes reminiscent of the Amsterdam School’s imaginative style guided visitors along clearly labeled routes, while carefully placed captions and floor markers contextualized historical sketches and photographs. By blending archival authenticity with contemporary design insights, the exhibition managed to show how a century-old movement still resonates in today’s urban strategies.

Media coverage from national outlets lauded this approach, confirming that the blend of storytelling, spatial design, and eco-friendly materials created an engaging tribute to Amsterdam’s storied architectural lineage.

The new brand captures Publieke Werken’s essence: celebrating Amsterdam’s visionary architecture through immersive exhibit design that connects visitors with the city’s storied heritage.

Beyond aesthetics, this initiative underscores Publieke Werken's dedication to bridging past and present, championing a dynamic vision of urban innovation.
